Kejadian 24:3-4

24:3 so that I may make you solemnly promise ¹  by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth: You must not acquire ²  a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living. 24:4 You must go instead to my country and to my relatives ³  to find ⁴  a wife for my son Isaac.”

34:6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went to speak with Jacob about Dinah. ⁵

34:8 But Hamor made this appeal to them: “My son Shechem is in love with your daughter. ⁶  Please give her to him as his wife.

[24:3]  ¹ tn Following the imperative, the cohortative with the prefixed conjunction indicates purpose.

[24:3]  ² tn Heb “because you must not take.”

[24:4]  ³ tn Heb “for to my country and my relatives you must go.”

[24:4]  ⁴ tn Heb “and take.”

[34:6]  ⁵ tn Heb “went out to Jacob to speak with him.” The words “about Dinah” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[34:8]  ⁶ tn Heb “Shechem my son, his soul is attached to your daughter.” The verb means “to love” in the sense of being emotionally attached to or drawn to someone. This is a slightly different way of saying what was reported earlier (v. 3). However, there is no mention here of the offense. Even though Hamor is speaking to Dinah’s brothers, he refers to her as their daughter (see v. 17).
